Christmas is over and now it's time to get back to work. Jeff had told the mexians that he works with to go up to the old house and get what they wanted. We went up today to check out what they had done. I was surprised to see that they had removed alot of the tin from the roof. It is slowly disappearing.
Jeff and Matt got out this weekend and cut all the tomato plants that had been staked up. Jeff ended up cutting the pam of his hand pretty bad. I had to take him to Urgent Care to get 6 stitches in it. He and Matt would in the field til will past dark getting them all cut down. This morning Jeff was back out there bright and early plowing everything under and getting it ready for the next planting. We are going to put in the blueberry bushes this week in that spot. I will be spending a couple of days getting mulch for it. Our local landfill offers free mulch 3 days a week. All you have to do is go pick it up. So I will be heading down there to get 2 or 3 loads a day. Then Jeff will be spending the evenings putting it in the field and mixing it in. On Sat we will go and dig up the blueberry plants that a family member offered us and transplant them into the field. I'm not sure how many years it will be before we have fruit from those. Jeff knows all about that.
I am hoping to get some work done in the office this week. I have applications that I need to send it in to get in farmer's markets in the other counties. I also have to set up the files on the various farming groups that I think we should join. i have also been doing alot of research on herbs for our bees and need to work out the layout for the placement of those. I am hoping that we can have a continual supply of flowers for the bees to feed on once the strawberries are gone.
I also want to try to get some of the crepe myrtles dug up here at the house and transplanted out to the farm. I am thinking of lining the fence along the right of way with them. They are all white and I think that will stand out really well in the spring. We also have 10 redbud tree saplings in the greenhouse so maybe I will do an alternate thing with them and the crepe myrtles. I just don't want to block the view from the highway. I think we need to go ahead and dug up the hollies that are going to surround the bee hive too. This is the perfect time to do all this transplanting.
We really have alot of work to do. I am hoping to get on some kind of schedule now that the holidays are over. I'm thinking that I can spend 2-3 hours a morning in the office while I wait on it to warm up some and then get out and do some of the outside stuff.
I have signed up for some classes at the small business center at our local community college on book keeping , marketing, etc. Those are lined up for next month and all are at night so that won't interfer with the outside work needed to be done.
We also have the lunch/meeting about the CSA next week. I am kind of excited about it. I am not sure if it is something that we want to do this year but it would be something that could be of interest to us at a later time once we are more established.
Hopefully the weather will hold up this week in order for me to get quite a bit of stuff done.
