We are having the old house torn down on Wednesday. Jeff has a friend that is going to do that for us. I am so excited!! Things are really starting to happen. Jeff went today to get the permit to tear down the old house and that cost a whopping $100! Then when we get ready to build we will have to get a building permit for that. But we did find out some good news while he was there. We don't have to hire a contractor to build the market which will save us a nice chunk of change. The lady at the permit office told Jeff that we can build it ourselves-as long as it is less than a certain square foot amount and ours is!! She also told us that due to the size of the building we didn't have to hire an architect to draw up blue prints, that we simply could have hand drawn a plan. I couldn't believe it. I am kind of glad that we did hire the architect though. This way we will have all the plans for the electrician and plumbers to go by and everything already measured out etc. for us to build by.
I spent part of the day running errands which included using a gift card to Belk's that I received. They had some really good deals on some very nice clothes. I was looking at some blouses etc and then got to thinking what do I need worse-another blouse to wear maybe once a month or do I need some utility clothes that I can work in at the farm. So I hit the section with the jogging pants and sweatshirts. I was thinking warmth, comfort, easy cleaning etc. It's amazing how starting this farm has changed almost every aspect of my life.
I also spent time trying to get in touch with Progress Energy about the temporary power pole and moving the meter box off of the old house. Each time I called I kept getting the recording that all circuits were busy, please try at a later time. Once or twice I can understand but ALL DAY getting the same message is very frustrating! So tomorrow I will have to start trying early tomorrow.
Robin and I are going to the CSA meeting tomorrow. I am really anxious to learn more about this and how it can benefit us. I will blog more on the details of it tomorrow night. Jeff was going to go with me but he said he needs to work after paying for that permit today and having to pay for the one's coming up. We figured that since Robin was going to be such a big part of the farm that she was the logical choice to go with me. I am hoping when the class is over that I can speak with the cooperative extension agent about the classes that I need to take to do/sell canning products and meats/cheeses. So hopefully I will come home with a lot of information to share with Jeff. I also have to go to the permit office and set up a time for Purvis to go and inspect the septic systm and get that certified. We have to have that done before we get the building permit. I also need to find out about having the water tested from the well.
We really want to do this right so that no one can come back and say oh you didn't this or that and here's a $500 fine. So we will get every permit and license and take every class available. And it all starts tomorrow...
