This is one of the plants I had ordered back in the fall and put in a pot in the greenhouse. I ordered these because they were supposed to be deer resistant/deterrents. I hope it works since the berries are turning red. I put them along the fence at the far end of the field. It's perennial so I can just let it go and it can get as big and as wild as it wants to. It resembles a fern and for the life of me I can not remember the name of it. Some farmer's wife, huh?
Another one of those deer resistant/deterrent plants. I alternated these 2 plants about 2 foot apart. I have others in the greenhouse to go between them if need be. Again I do not recall the name of this plant. It is rather prickly. You might be able to tell it looks kind of fuzzy and that's the little prickly things that will stick you. Good thing I remembered my gloves.
The heating and a/c guy is here!! At this point in my life I don't need the heat-my hot flashes take care of that. So the a/c part is truly welcome. I had to make sure he put enough vents in the kitchen to combat cooking heat and hot flash heat.
This is all the stuff the a/c guy brought with him. I took this picture around 11am and when we came back to the farm around 4 pm all of this stuff was off the porch and where it needed to be.
The plumber came while we were that at 4 and was finishing up his part for the rough in inspection. Jeff called the county to try to set that inspection up for Thursday but they were booked and Friday is a holiday for them. He was hoping the electrician could get his part finished by Wednesday so it could be inspected then but no such luck. So we are having to shoot for a Monday inspection. After that inspection then the interior walls will go up, light fixtures, etc. I can't wait!!!
The first set of door locks goes on. Jeff had to put it on the attic one because the wind kept blowing the doors open and shut. We have been having a time trying to get all of the doors level and closing without hitting. It has been a reall pain but this one is done! I will also admit at this point that I don't like heights and standing in this open doorway was really scary. I don't even want to talk about climbing the extension ladder up to it from inside the building.
One of the many things on our to do list was to order the tin for the roof today. So Jeff is in the attic measuring the roof. We have both been trying to convince the other one of our choices in tin color. I had wanted red because I thought it would be really eye catching from the highway. Plus it would have a barn-like to it. Jeff wanted dark green.
Another photo of Jeff measuring the roof. His color choice won out. Once we got to Robbins to order the tin I caved. The red really didn't look red at all. It was more orange than anything and I figured after many years it would start fading and start to look peachy. So the dark green won me over. It will be here April 8th.
That's all the photos for now. I called the State health Dept in Raleigh and asked about us being able to accept the WIC produce vouchers at our market. They do not have it set up where individual farmers can do this from their own markets. It has to be a group of farmers in an organized and authorized farmer's market. So that is out for us. We didn't make it into the farmer's market we were in last year. There is another one that was held at SCC on Wednesdays last year and Taylor didn't seem to think there would be a problem with us getting into that one. The only problem is that we would have to find someone to go to the market and sell unless our one closed day a week was the same as the market. But then the problem arises that I would have to be at the farmer's market and wouldn't be able to get any planting, restocking, cleaning, or deliveries done which is what the closed day would be used for. So we are going to ponder on this for a couple of more days.
We also spent some time in Lowe's today trying to get the locks for the doors keyed to accept the same key. Neither one of us wanted to keep up with too many keys. But the front door lock didn't want to do right. So it will have a different key than the rest of them. But that's fine. We can have the other one hanging in the office because it's not like we are going to need to get in those other doors unless we are open.
Yesterday, I got some of the landscape flowers planted along with the deer resistant ones. I planted 7 yellow bell bushes along the fence at the highway. In between them I am going to plant a white Crepe Myrtle. I had one more yellow bell bush that I planted between some persimmon trees. Two elephant ears were planted in the back of the market at the well house. We had planted about 5 oak Leaf hydrangeas the day before and I took the other 4 out of the greenhouse and planted those. I put them in a straight line between the 2 trees that stand between the strawberry field and the driveway. We will use these as the stopping point for parking. I had also dug up some lillies from mom's house and our house and planted those around the black walnut tree by the driveway. I had two large black potting pots full. If I had to guess it had to be about 50 lilies. At some point this week I will need to dig up about that many more to go around the other tree. Plus I still have the other plants in the greenhouse to keep the deer out of the field.
I have a busy week ahead of me and I hope along the way i will be able to blog about everything. If I don't do it when it happens I have a tendency to forget what all we have done.
I just did the last check on the baby chicks and they are doing just fine. We had to adjust the heating lamp a little earlier. We had one on each tub and that got it way too hot in the tubs so we put it down to one lamp hung over the center. They seem to be alot happier with it that way. So I can sleep peacefully now.
