Big Greenhouse

Not sure if I have written about what I call our Big Greenhouse or not so the bried back story on it is that we got a grant for an organic high tunnel. In order to not have to pay back the grant money we have to keep it organic for 3 years and then after that it's all ours and we can do whatever we want with it. But we are going to keep it organic since there is a growing market for that.

So today I spent much of the day in it working on the beds that we have planted withour winter greens. I think I mentioned in the previous post that we planted it a little diffrently this year. Instead of long rows going from end to end, we did small beds along each side and left the center open for the Mule to get through. Right now I have 23 beds in there and tomorrow I will be making a 24th small bed. I have space that I just hate seeing to go to waste. We had a huge calling for our salad mix last year so I will plant more of that in the small bed. Today I got everything re-seeded. The first plantings on the right we used last years seed and some of it just didn't come up. I gave it just a little over 2 weeks to make an appearance and decided it was time. It is gradually getting colder and I need to get these things sprouting with their true leaves on them before the cold hits.

It started raining when I was about 1/2 way through with the seeding and the dogs decided they needed to come in out of the rain. Of course I have to run them out of the veggie beds. I think I am going to have a hard time with them in the little small bed I am going to do tomorrow since this is their spot to go to when I run them out of everywhere else in there.

The plastic across the roof of the greenhouse has stretched and so the rain piles up in some of the sections. We have pushed up on them some much over the past year that some have holes in them. So there are some washed out points in the beds that I need to do something about. We also had some holes that got cut into the bottom of the sides when the guys weed eated that I fixed and hopefully that will help keep some of the heat in. Lately it has been warm enough during the days to warrant opening the big doors on the end but I have to get them closed by 3 so that it can hold the heat in for the night. Pretty soon there won't be any heat that can be held in.

I have been thinking about planting a deciduous tree on either side of it. In the summer it gets hot enough in there to melt the plastic drip tape. So I am trying to figure out what variety of tree to plant that would help shade it some but in the winter time it wouldn't block any of the sun. Right now I am thinking about Silver Maple. We have one in the yard that I can start propagating. It grows fast and the shade it would provide would be filtered.

I neglected to mention that I had left the Mule in the yard while I came in for lunch and that's when it started raining. Completely unaware of this because it was a slow misty rain I kept doing my little bit of housework and all the seeds and my planting notebook got completely soaked. Soooo I now have my dining room table covered in seeds trying to dry them and had to re-write my new notebook and try to decipher as much info as needed. Talk about fun!! I do so much on the computer that actually sitting down and writing for about an hour with pen and paper acted up the carpal tunnel.

Well that's is for today's post. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit brighter and get the seeds going that I set today.
