Well I guess if I am going to advertise the blog on facebook and on our business cards then I'd better start keeping it update (haha). I usually get long winded with the posts and it takes awhile to get it all out. So maybe if I do several short "blurbs" throughout and often that might be a little easier.
Right now we have closed the farm for the rest of 2011. With the economy being as strained as it is, we felt it would be best to close early and work on re-vamping some things. In the spring we have the strawberries that keep the farm extremely busy but after that season is over with things slow down greatly. So we are working on ideas to keep busy all year. We are also focusing on our winter vegetables and the customer base we have built with the local restaraunts.
In the large greenhouse that we are keeping organic we have changed the layout in it this year to see if we can yield more produce. Last year we did rows from one end to the other. This year we have 23 individual beds in there. Each one is labeled has been seeded for the first set. Within a week of seeding it we had sprouts coming up and in about a week to 2 weeks we will be able to harvest some of the baby spinach and baby arugula. We had several new restaraunts that wanted to try our winter greens this year so we had to plant even more than last year. This is fantastic!!
The animals on the farm are growing like weeds. We have 2 new pigs that we have named Barbie and Q and they are so much fun! These 2 looove mud puddles way more than Pork Chop and Bacon did. They are also growing alot faster than they did too. The one thing they have in common is their love of tomatoes. Just like the first 2, Barbie and Q will root through all the slop to get to the tomatoes. We had a problem with our tomatoes this year and only a few were sellable. So the piggies were lovin it! They would see me coming on the Mule (gas powered-not animal) and would run back and forth making all kinds of noises until I got there with the bucket. Jeffrey put a pump in the barrel that I haul back and forth to give them water and Q is so funny when it comes time to water up. He grabs the hose and slings his head back and forth like a dog. He will also run back and forth through it wanting to get squirted. We have 50 new chicks since ours got attacked by foxes and coyotes. From the first set we have 1 rooster and 4 hens left. We also picked up a another little rooster from my aunt. We didn't know it was a rooster at the time because it was such a small little chick. The 50 chicks we have are about 10 weeks old and they are going through a bag of feed faster than the 2 pigs are!
We have done so much since my last post that it is hard to even touch on all of it. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to get more in-depth about some of the things I just touched base on here today.
