Row Covers and Rock Bags

The strawberry field with all the row covers in place. On the day we had gusts of winds of 50 mph this field looked like extremely large white sheets blowing up and over. I really wish I had the camera with me that day. It was a sight to behold. On the outside of the fence are a few of the sand bags that we used to put rocks in for that day. You can also see them scattered throughout the field.

These were the first rock bags that we did. I had cut 3 ft 6 in sections of this plastic mesh and then put a coffee can full of rocks in each end. These weren't enough to hold the row covers down during the wind storm. We had a pallet of bricks at the house that we loaded up and tried adding those in too. But the weight of these 2 together still wasn't enough to hold them down. So Jeff had to go to the farm supply place and get the sand bags to put rocks into. The combination of the 3 worked out great. Like I have said in a previous post this first year will be a learning experience. So far I have learned it's better to be over prepared for anything than not to be ready at all.

This is just a photo of what it looks like down the outside of one of the rows. I think I had mentioned in one previous post that deer had gotten into our field even after we put the electric fence up. I tried describing the posts and wire Jeff had put on top of the fence as an additional deterrent so now you have a picture of what I was writing about. It has worked out really well so far. Only one small baby one had gotten and he probable just walked over the fence wire or something. The plants looked really good under the covers. We are hoping in a couple of weeks to be able to take the covers off.
